i DID see people on tiktok saying that we shouldn’t care about palestine because they’re conservative and anti lgbt and a whole bunch of shit and. for real? for real? THAT is touch grass. THAT is go outside and touch grass. zero compassion zero consideration for real people ZERO brain function in fact. like you know there ARE gay people in palestine? like if texas was getting air raided would you say fuck texans, theyre all republican? actually dont answer that lmfao we already saw it happen with the power outages. people will generalize and people will condemn without nuance or scrutiny. no sense of value for human life. who gives a shit about other people lol
gonna clarify that even if every single palestinian and texan was conservative they still would not deserve death.
and to the people saying that israel is also bad on gay rights, which was beside my original point, this is another way that some people will justify their apathy about the entire palestinian conflict. why should a white gay american care about two middle eastern nations fighting if both of those nations are homophobic? it’s brushing off genocide. it’s using identity politics to detach from the real world because caring requires too much effort. it’s easier to not care about a crisis if you can avoid looking at their humanity.
a friendly reminder that microaggressions against asians can also look like this:
pretending to gag at asian food
pretending to be weirded out by asian customs and cultures
excusing cultural appropriation (often through ignoring the stories of asians who have been mocked for wearing their ethnic dress while praising a white person for doing so)
not trying to learn how to pronounce an asian person’s ethnic name correctly, or asking, “can i call you by something else?”
adopting an asian name for the ~aesthetic~
using the words “oriental” and “exotic” to describe asian people, particular asian women
ignoring the experiences and stories of south, southeast, and central asians
making sweeping assumptions about asian countries (including their political, historical and cultural landscape)
treating the entire asian community as a monolith and ignoring the fact that the experiences of asian nationals are remarkably different from the asian diaspora/migrant community
co-opting asian aesthetics into creative media without acknowledging their history
I hesitate to say this because I’m afraid it will sound like I’m belittling everyone’s rightful fury over the cruel, callous “jokes” being made by smug holier-than-thou leftists up north. But I came down on the side of offering a counterweight, because, christ, SOMEONE has to say something kind.
I just want you all to know: For the past 72 hours my dash has been nothing but Northerners expressing intense concern and helplessness, as well as trading off and collating as many cold-weather survival tips as they can think of. Anyone who’s used to the cold is absolutely terrified at the thought of these kinds of temperatures striking areas without the infrastructure to handle them, has nothing but compassion and appreciation for the resources they have access to, and they’re wracking their collective brains for any tiny little details that might make this easier.
I’ve seen multiple posts where someone explicitly mentions how grateful they were for Texans coming together to do this same thing in reverse, when Northern states were hit by deadly heatwaves. How scared they were and how much that kindness meant to them. They haven’t forgotten.
You’re not alone down there. The assholes are loud but few and far between; for everyone making a stupid joke there’s seven people leaping to shut them the fuck down.
The rest of the country does not think you deserve this. We don’t think you brought it on yourselves. We’re pulling for you. We’re furious with every corrupt asshole who’s responsible for this entirely preventable bullshit. We desperately wish we could do something more.
Ok but like… y’all need to stop seeing Asian, Latinx, and Indigenous people as “between” black and white.
From the way you talk about us, this is what it feels like you think:
Asian aren’t “closer” to white people than Latinx, Indigenous people aren’t somewhere in the middle. Educate yourself, use common sense, and grow tf up.
White people can (I encourage you) to reblog, don’t clown around.
i think we can all agree that the scene in derry girls where they fight on the prom stage covered in tomato juice while it cuts back and forth to the adults watching the news where they announce that the IRA have called a ceasefire meaning peace for the first time in 25 years all set to zombie by the cranberries has done more for pop culture than pulp fiction ever has
every election cycle, the topics of gerrymandering, voter suppression, etc in the south are discussed in depth, and every election cycle, white people from the north go “LA LA LA CAN’T HEAR YOU, i hope all those southern poors die in a hurricane”
Like oh my fucking god do y’all really think *Texas* with our 55% non-white population is always red cause we WANNA BE?!?!?!?!?
it’s fucking infuriating. a lot of americans genuinely think the only problem is the electoral college (…if they think that’s a problem at all) and refuse to understand that people are disenfranchised based on where they live, among other factors
If you plan on dropping your ballot off at a ballot drop box, make sure it’s officially marked by your local municipality or government. You can find official ones near you by going here. There have been reported instances of people setting up fake drop boxes. There have also been instances of people setting the drop boxes on fire.
If you see any persons “standing guard” while openly carrying a weapon outside of a polling place, this is considered voter intimidation and should be reported. You can report voterintimidation at The Election Protection Hotline (1-866-OUR-VOTE), The U.S Department of Justice Voting Rights Hotline (800-253-3931), or with local and state officials, including poll workers; your county clerk, elections commissioner, elections supervisor; or your state board of elections.
If you have work on election day try to plan accordingly with regards to your time and your states laws which can be found here. Don’t just assume that you have the right to take off work to vote because you read it in the comments of a post somewhere. Always confirm with your boss where you are going.
I will try to add more as they come up.
A few more I’ve thought of
If you decide to vote in person, please do yourself a favor and take the necessary precautions to stop the spread of COVID-19. Wear a mask. Use hand sanitizer after touching any surfaces and before touching your face. Consider bringing your own pen instead of using the community one (if they have that at your polling place). Social distance, especially if you have to wait in line.
Also most polling places will likely have longer wait times as well as lines due to COVID-19. Give yourself enough time to vote, but know that once you’re in line they have to let you vote. Look up the hours of your polling place.
